More than 3,000 images have been selected here from manuscripts associated with particular places or regions across the British Isles. They reflect almost 1,000 years of history, from around 600 to 1600.
Elisabeth Yota (Ph.D. in Art History and Archaeology) has been a lecturer at the University Paris IV Sorbonne since 2011. Her research focuses on Byzantine art and especially on liturgical illuminated manuscripts. She is author of Byzance, Une autre Europe (2006) and co-editor of Donation et Donors dans le monde byzantin (2012).
Because the recording of historical events was such an important task, illuminations were ordered by civic officials and religious leaders to be added to various pages in order to add interest and importance to their appearance. This volume offers a step by step guide for undertaking this work.
These pages display illuminations from the Getty Museum's collection of illuminated manuscripts. The selections are arranged roughly chronologically in a survey that reflects broadly the strengths of the collection.
